Nine Mile Canyon and Gordon Creek

Side by side rock art weekend Spend two days visiting rock art near Price Utah while enjoying some of the best views in the state. A URARA tour is scheduled March 23-24 The weekend begins Friday night March 22 with a social at Layne and Karen Miller’s house featuring snacks. Bring your own drinks. The Saturday ride will begin at 8 a.m. from the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum located at 155 East Main Street. Park on the north side of the museum in the parking lot. The tour will trailer the vehicles to Nine Mile Canyon where the vehicles will be off-loaded. Stops will include petroglyphs and pictographs panels created by the early inhabitants of canyon, which include Fremont and Ute cultures. The tour will visit panels in Nine Mile, Cottonwood, and Dry Canyons. Tour will return to Price by 5-6 p.m. On Sunday the tour will visit nearby Gordon Creek. The tour will begin at the Carbon County Fairgrounds, 878 Fairgrounds Way) at 8 a.m. and will see the Gordon Creek trestle, one of the longest span trestles in Utah. From there the group will hike about a mile round trip to visit petroglyphs and pictographs created by members of the Fremont or Ute Cultures. The most interesting figure seen is a pictograph similar to the so-called headhunter panels near Vernal. Participants should bring lunch, Saturday walking shoes, water and warm clothing. March in Price can range from 30 degrees during the day to the low 70s so be prepared for anything. We will try to be back early so those needing to head home can do so. If Apple Maps is used, the directions could be misleading.
